Hit the "Back" button on your web browser and REALLY look at Duane's smile in that first party pic. I'll wait........
Duane's smile was genuine & his laugh infectous. Sometimes we can get a little jealous when people that only met him in his Gator Productions Inc. years try to claim Duane like they've known him for 20 or 30 years. We say to each other, "They don't REALLY love Duane like we do." But we may be wrong. Duane was THE REALEST! And it wasn't because of parties. Anyone who spent a little time with D one-on-one in any environment fell in love with his persona instantly. It wasn't hard. I don't care if it was 1 conversation 10 years ago. D had that personality and that smile that you could never forget and that immediately made you feel like more than an acquaintance. Duane was the epitome of the phrase -
"To know me is to love me".

Quick Story: Right after I did Kermit's wedding, we drove back to the block. D had rented 2 vans for all of us to get out there. The deal was someone, I think Freddy or Herb was supposed to drive me back to school so I can take my equipment back. Well, when we got to Belmont, everybody was tired. So i'm like, " Yo, who's gonna take me back to school?" and D was like, " I'm tired, I ain't goin nowhere!" And he wouldn't let noone else take the van either cause he didn't want nuthin to happen to them. So I was stuck. Me and D got into it on the corner, and I ended up leaving my equipment in Rashea's crib until I could get a ride. My pride was hurt and I was on some real EFF Duane, and EFF the Gators stuff! This was 90 or 91. So I stopped going to the party's and trips and stuff, just started doing my own thing. Then I moved out to ATL. I had to call D for something, this was in '99, maybe it was just to say hello. We get to talking, and catching up, cause I hadn't seen him in years. So after about 20 minutes, we are about to say goodbye and D goes, " Corey. I need to say something to you. A couple of years ago we had a falling out, and I was wrong, and I just want to apologize to you for that. I notice that things changed after that night, and I miss you."
OK, so here I am choking up, and holding back tears. I didn't realize that he could tell, that he even payed attention to me. All I could say after being speechless for like a minute was, "WOW." At first I tried to play cool like, " You don't need to apologize to me D, I forgot all about it...", and Duane was like, " Yes I do, and I didn't forget about it." (long pause - choked up again)
I replied," You know what D. I need to apologize to you too. I've said some negative stuff about you in the past, cause I was hurt and mad at you from that night. I apologize to you for any pain that I might have caused you. I love you big brother. And Thank You for your apology, it means alot!"
Needless to say, we stayed on the phone for another few minutes. But I can honestly say, that was THE defining moment in OUR relationship. Duane and I spoke at least once a month from that point on, and we caught up on a lot of stuff. I felt like a weight was lifted off of me. I didn't know Duane had THAT MUCH influence on my life! D was my Big Brother!

Corey, how did you start that comment with "quick story"? LOL
But since we're sharing stories about Duane's heart, here's mine:
In 2001 when I came home from where I came home from, Duane started taking me to parties with him 3 or 4 times a week and calling me everyday to go with him to pick up & drop off money, flyers, or tickets. I was just happy cause before I left for Virginia I wasn't on D's level agewise so we never hung out 1 one 1. So after about a week or two D came & picked me up to play pool but we had to stop at his house first. So we went in, his did his thing, and we were leaving. When he turned around from locking the door D said,"Here hold this." I looked at the money, and it was a short stack of 100's. I didn't count it, I just put it in my pocket until he tells me who to give it to. So eventually I asked, "D where are we dropping this?" He replied, "Nowhere, that's for you. Hold onto that." I won't say exactly how much it was cause that's not important. The point is that I was not on Gator Productions payroll. He didn't owe me or promise me anything for riding around with him to handle his business. I was doing it for the pleasure of his company & to catch up on what's been going on with him since the whole Gator Productions Inc movement was new to me. I told D, "You don't have to pay me for anything." And the last thing he said on that matter was, "I'm not paying you, that's for you!"
That was Diamond D.
